The collection consists of scrapbooks, letters, a book manuscript, and a copy of a speech. The scrapbooks make up the bulk of the collection and contain newspaper articles written by Cole. One volume is a collection of articles written for the Register (1893-94) called Sketches on horseback, a series of observations made while riding around Des Moines. Eight books contain articles written during his congressional service. One volume concerns a 1925 European trip, and 2 volumes relate his experiences during the second Pan American Highway Congress held in Rio de Janeiro in 1929. The speech, Herbert Hoover's boyhood in Iowa, was delivered before the House of Representatives on May 29, 1928. The manuscript for Cole's book I remember, I remember (published by the State Historical Society in 1936) and a folder of letters complete the collection. The correspondence primarily discusses political issues of the time and is dated from 1893 to 1936 (no letters included from 1921-1930).

Cole served in Congress from 1921 to 1932. He engaged in newspaper work with the Iowa State Register (1887-1898) and the Cedar Rapids Republican (1898-1921).
